Closely associated with the rainforest, the orangutan is the only large primate present outside of Africa. Two of the three currently recognized species live in the forests of Borneo and Sumatra, hence their names.
The Bornean orangutan accounts for approximately 90% of all specimens, while the remaining 10% belongs to the two species found in Sumatra: the Sumatran orangutan and the Tapanuli orangutan (southern Sumatra).
